Portfolio for Karen Humpage - Commissionaportrait

As a self-taught artist from an early age, Karen has been commissioned to paint a wide variety of subjects. In 1991, while working in office administration, an interest in cemetery conservation led her to the delights of painting monuments and mausoleums in watercolour. Since then, she has made detailed studies of this and other historical and architectural subjects, which has in turn led to commissions for house, building and memorial portraits. Karen has now been able to turn a part-time hobby into a full-time career, and works as an artist, colourist and calligrapher.

Artist's Statement   For me, buildings have souls and character, and I enjoy reaching behind the façade to bring this out in my paintings. Like the lines on a person’s face, the weathering of stone and wood reflects the life of the building, and is one of the most important elements in any of my portrayals.

Statement      The majority of my work is done from photographs. I will arrange a visit to meet the client and their home to discuss the best viewpoint and composition. I will then take a series of photographs, which I will use to make a detailed sketch of the layout. In some cases, a main portrait surrounded by detailed vignettes works well, especially for houses with lots of architectural detail, or interesting garden ornamentation. A copy of the final sketch will be sent to the client for approval, before starting the portrait proper.
Time for completion – 4 to 8 weeks.

Review of solo exhibition:
“…..Karen Humpage’s art exhibition “Elysian Fields”, is on view, displaying examples of her watercolours of funerary monuments, sculpture and mausolea, many associated with Kensal Green. Karen has a remarkable gift of portraying the texture of worn stonework while reflecting the spirit and colour of the original carving…..”
Historic Chapels Trust Newsletter – December 1998
Article and review of exhibition:
“Her pictures …… reveal an attention to detail similar to that of a draughtsman”
