Portfolio for Rene Tweehuysen - Commissionaportrait
The Dutch contemporary realist painter Rene Tweehuysen was born in Utrecht in 1957. Since 1999 the artist and his family have lived in the northernmost part of Holland near the sea in the Frisian village of Oude Bildtzijl. From a very young age he knew he wanted to be a painter. After studying at ARTIBUS in Utrecht he started painting people in a stylised setting and the Tweehuysian style slowly develops. Over a period of three years, he intensively studied 16th and 17th century painters manuscripts. In 1994 Tweehuysen exhibited a series of portraits for the first time in galerie Mokum in Amsterdam. This was all free-style work. Since that time not a lot has changed except for the fact that his subjects now commission his work. In 1995 he painted the Dutch writer Harry Mulisch, and for a commissioned portrait for Rockanje town hall, Rene Tweehuysen visited in 1998 Queen Beatrix of Holland at Huis ten Bosch in Den Haag. |

Artist's Statement |
|
Beside painting portraits with solid backgrounds it’s a challenge to creating something that is more than just a portrait. For example by placing the model in front of interiors with windows and landscapes with cloudy skies. That makes a portrait more exciting. The strong interaction between model and background gives his portraits a somewhat magical effect.
Rene Tweehuysen uses classical painting techniques of the Dutch, Flemish and Italian portrait painters. These techniques are still relevant today. Building up the paint in a series of layers results in a rich surface appearance that creates a painting with depth. A natural softness is achieved through the use of delicate colours, contrast and contours. |

Statement |

I will paint from my own photographs and the photo sessions are often in the client’s surroundings. An initial brainstorm with the client will give an idea what the painting has to depict. After this meeting a creative proces of sketching will develop the final concept sketch for the client. Depending on how busy I am and complexity of the painting it will take 3 to 6 months to finish. Every painting is different and although I try as hard as I can it is not always possible to guarantee strickt deadlines.
Portraits are delivered unframed but I’am happy to offer advice. |
