Introduction |
|
After leaving the Royal College of Art in 1993, I went to live in New York where I continued to work as an illustrator. On my return I resumed my first love: portrature and figurative painting, which became a full-time occupation from 2000 onwards.
I have spent lengthy stays in the Carribean, Africa, the Middle East and South America, where many of my narrative pieces are set.
Recently I have been in solo shows. Much of my work concentrating on more classic, still quieter portrature. |

Artist's Statement |
|
I always have the portrait uppermost in my mind in a picture be it a group narrative, nude or a straightforward portrait whether commissioned or otherwise. I prefer to work in layers and stages loving the way the varying facets of a sitters personality reveal themselves over time on the canvas. I prefer a restrained pallette relishing the greater unity and realism this affords a piece. |
|
Statement |
|
I prefer to work from life. I require a minimum of six two-hour sittings. The first sitting consists of me drawing to establish a pose.
I then, in the next sitting, commence working directly on the canvas.
Where time is a problem for the sitter, i will work from photos though I must take them myself and, if at all possible, I find it extremely helpful to still have a two to three-hour session with the subject to make an oil sketch which I'll use to work from in conjunction with the photos.
I am happy to travel, though I do have a very centrally located London studio not far from the South Bank that is very well lit, spacious and near all transport links with additional parking. |
