Portfolio for Julia Heseltine - Commissionaportrait

Julia was born in London, and comes from a family whose history has been strongly associated with painting. Her mother, Anna Zinkeisen and her Aunt were very well known painters from the mid 20th Century. Helped by her mother, Julia started painting at a very early age. Her first commission at the young age of 16 was a portrait of Jonathan Porritt (aged four) who went on to become a key figure with Friends of the Earth. Julia studied at the Byam Shaw and the Royal Academy Schools. Her portraits are varied and powerful, particularly her civic commissions. Julia has developed an exciting technique for compositional vignettes that add mystery and animation to her portraits. Julia is also developing another looser, more painterly style that she will be developing along side her traditional type of portraiture. The artist also paints animals and houses in landscape either as a picture in their own right or as part of a portrait.

Artist's Statement   My aim is to reach somewhere below the surface and to bring out in the picture the real character of the subject as I see it, so that whether you know them or not the portrait will come over as a whole person with depth. I am concerned that the picture is not just a true portrait but above all a painting worth looking at in terms of composition, colour, atmosphere etc, irrespective of who it is.

Statement      I prefer to do my preliminary sketches for a portrait in the sitters own surroundings where I can get an impression of their life and absorb some of the character and atmosphere of the whole personality. To this end I like to visit two or three times usually for a two hour session, when I will do many quick oil sketches on paper and take some photographs to refer to. The sitter does not have to sit stock still, and can talk, so its practically painless. Although the commission does not come framed I am happy to organize framing if wished.
*NB* Julia's prices are dependant on size and number of sitters.
