Statement      For a charcoal head and shoulders 2-4 sittings are required, depending on the level of finish desired. For a painted head and shoulders 5-7 sittings are required. A sitting lasts roughly three hours with regular breaks. This length of time for sittings is very important for capturing depth and the true character. I prefer to work from life as I feel this is the best way to capture a person’s true individual expression as it gives me time to get to know the sitter. However if it is not possible to work from life as in the case of small children then I am prepared to work from good quality photographs, however it is best if I meet the sitter in person as well. I generally work from my studio but I will travel and work on site provided there is enough natural light available. Many of my clients are surprised at how much they enjoy the sittings and how relaxed they are. I make it my priority to ensure the sitter is comfortable. To make sure they are completely happy with the pose I take a few initial photographs and discuss clothing etc. In general people enjoy the experience and discovering a little about painting!
