Portfolio for Lamar Raine - Commissionaportrait
From a graphic design background, Lamar came to Europe in 1971 and worked in the advertising and publishing industry. When she had children, portraiture became the main focus of her art, using conte crayon for her expressive and reflective drawings. This is a type of chalk developed in the 18th century.
Working from life with only a one hour sitting, she aims to capture the essence of her sitters, ideally in their own home where she will travel to make the sketches used as the basis for her finished drawing which is then produced in her London studio and delivered within one month. Her materials are all acid free, museum quality.
Lamar is regularly commissioned throughout Britain, Barbados and America and her work can be viewed in several London galleries. |

Artist's Statement |
|
‘I think it is of primary importance to make every effort to capture the essence of a person in my portraiture. It helps to arrange the sitting in one’s home as most of us are more comfortable in our own surroundings. If I succeed in this then I next try to ensure the drawing is a work that will stand the test of time and be enjoyed by many for all generations to come.’ |
|
Statement |
|
'Before beginning a work, the drawing is discussed in depth either in person, by phone, via letter or email.
Once the commission is to proceed, a convenient date is arranged for the sitting. There preliminary sketches will be made and some photography may be used for reference. This approach guarantees a sensitive and highly finished drawing measuring 58 x 49cm. The completed portrait is then presented in a washlined mount, hand crafted on acid free museum board with hinged backing, all in a large protective envelope.'
The prices quoted are for standard dry media, ie charcoal, chalk, pastel, conte crayon, pencil etc. This artist does not work in sculpture or paint media. |
